Tubed Lights?

Filed under: My Cup of Socie-Tea — Santhosh @ 1:11 PM

For all that Dharam Singh had proclaimed about making the pelf difference smaller and for all that H.D.KumaraSwamy is claiming to be doing to act upon it, i saw a rather unique sight last night (3a.m., so morning if u wish) when i was walking home from office.

Workers were digging up ditches next to the footpath (in essence on the footpath itself, the foot path being 30% of the road). Nothing out of context in urban India. What made me take a second look was that they were working by a strange setup to provide them the lighting for their work. They used burning tubes for the purpose. They had these synthetic pipes/tubes that we normally use for domestic water purposes (the ones in orange or green with a ringed design pattern) and had lighted one end so that it was burning. Almost like a candle, minus the thread. In fact what made me take a second was the sight of the melt from the tubes coming down. It made a strange sight to see a stream of shining liquid (liquid plastic in the half light thrown) streaming down. The poor guys were stripped to their waist and it must have been plenty hot coz they had to have these flaming tubes near to the place they were digging on account of the poor light that was the result.

10 metres from an all night 24*7 Hero Honda showroom, 100 metres from IBM and Microsoft, and within 500 metres from Dell, Kanbay, Yahoo and LG. Lights blazing 24 hours in all these ‘work’ places and here… Not to speak of the numerous lights set up every metre of the way for some whatsisname politician. Moreover it is one of the busiest roads in bangalore, the Koramangala-Indiranagar intermediate ring road. Dont ask me why the street lights are never switched on. Inspite of a half constructed fly-over making it a dead-end. Corporate India being serviced by half naked men working off flaming tubes at 3a.m!

Toxic waste, inhuman working conditions, child labour, slavery, environmental degradation, exploitation… sometimes i wish i had opted for a career in law.
