Days of our Lives!

I wish i was 25 and married!

Filed under: My Dayz — Santhosh @ 5:47 PM

I really wish i could be so for 2 hours. The reason? Read on.

Three weeks back i had a bit of shopping to do in Big Bazaar, Koramangala. Awaiting my turn on the billing queue (maybe the 40th guy on the 6th queue), i was approached by an ICICI agent (for the usual “life-time free gold credit card”), a HSBC agent (same purpose), a third guy (dint give him a chance to speak, Ha Ha) and finally by a guy from ING Vysys who asked me to fill a card for some lucky dip offer. Thinking back on my other ‘lucky dip’ when i won a month of free Hutch when i answered those q’s at The Forum, and to shut off the cries from the kid on the next queue who was ‘persuading’ his mom for some fancy new eatable, i borrowed a pen (ya, i still borrow ’em) and filled it up.

And that was that. Until Tuesday (21-02-2006). Two strikes in a row! I get a call on my mobile and am told it’s a David from some travel agency. I get ready to slam the receiver down on yet another spam call when he tells me i’ve won a trip to Goa. Ever the sceptic, i decide it’s yet another prank by one of my friends. So after i manage to irritate him enough and he manages to convince me, i allow him to give me the details.

The base facts are simple enough. Sponsored by ING Vysya. Total of 20 lucky guys. Am the 14th (GO2608B-14 is my number according to him). Trip to Goa for 3 days and 3 nights for 2 adults (read as couple) and 2 children. Stay at Sun Village Beach Resorts where we’ll get a cottage to ourselves for the duration and a night in a luxury cruiser. To and fro flight on Kingfisher free. Offer once accepted is valid for a year. No food (t’is ok, i’ll be on a diet). Total package worth a cool 15000 bucks. And am not even asked to take up any scheme in ING Vysysa (which i have the sense to ask). He asks me if i’m accepting the offer. Of all the dumb questions! He then proceeds to invite me to dinner at some place on Jyothi Nivas College Road. For presenting the package and for some photo sessions for the press. Boy! Free trip to Goa AND my photo on the papers! Am i smiling!

And then starts the downhill part. First ques – am i married? I tell him No (honest guys!). And he tells me this offer is only for married couples btw 25 and 49. And am no longer a child :-(, stipulation is below 12 yrs of age. So i decide ok, no probs, i’ll gift it to someone. And pat comes the reply – only for a couple settled in Bangalore.

I ask him if it’s transferable and he says Ya. So i think and think and think some more. Erickson’s just married. So i decide to gift him a honeymoon trip. I try his mobile but it remains not reachable. Poor guy. He avoids my calls to escape the 50 bucks he owes me and in the process misses Goa. As with all things,, i call up my parents when i’ve run out of ideas and dad promptly names 50 people satisfying all the criteria. I select a person at random, interrupt my dad to inform him, and when David calls up, i provide him with the contact number. Dad tells me today that they have accepted the package and sent me a thanks. Great!

Thinking it over, it looks like a publicity gimmick. I remember writing down just the details that i was 21 and unmarried along with my mobile number. And i find myself ineligible for precisely these 2 reasons. These guys pull a stunt like this so that they get some extra publicity on account of all the griping that poor people like me are bound to do.

Forgot to tell you that David almost hung up on me. When he initially told me the offer’s for a couple, i asked him what if the person who got the offer was gay! Was he mad! 🙂

  13. dai santhosh.. i too had a similar experience.. that trip was to munnar..courtesy Mahindra club resorts and CENTRAL.All i had to do was sit thro a presentation and thro all thier persuations don shell out any money. And i get the trip for free… but unluckily that too was for married couples..i asked if a girl friend was ok?he said only fiancee is ok,.. could have taken some girl and lied.Yet being honest let it pass.. Don worry getting married for all these silly reasons is not worth it.In fact getting married for any reason is silly and not worth it ;-).. what so u say.If u find time u too can connect with me@
