Talk abt eco-balance!

Happened to read an article on BT yesterday. About the residents of Sanjiang in China. Let me just give it to you here.

The village had quite an amount of snake trouble. So the people went on a snake hunt (my guess is it was something like a snake ‘vaaram‘). And managed to kill off the majority of the reptiles. Everything should have been well, except that the decreas in the number of snakes resulted in the village suffering from a rat infestation. So the villagers all pooled in some money, $860 to be precise, to purchase cats which they released in about 250 acres of land to control the rats.

Well, that solved the problem. The move was a success and the villagers decided to reward the cats for the good harvest they expect this year as a result. So they splashed out on a fish banquet for the more than 200 cats to thank them for their hard work. Nice people eh?

But these nice people also happen to live near the sea, and the fish they treated the cats with came straight from it. And it just happens to be the season for sharks and, well, we now have news of three cases of shark attack.

So any bright ideas anyone? Maybe we could just ask Salman to leave the chinkaras and the bucks alone and go do some hunting there.
